5 Alexa Uses for Parents

One parent’s favorite routines and actions with Amazon’s Alexa to make managing kids a little easier (or a little more fun).

I started using Alexa’s simple voice interface and custom routines to make certain tasks more enjoyable (and easier on me). My kids have even used Alexa to help with spelling words or double-checking facts that they are wondering about.

You can create custom routines by opening your Alexa app on your phone, choosing the More menu, and then choosing Routines. The process is pretty self-explanatory from there, but I’ve listed the basic details of our favorite routines below and threw in a few of our favorite general Alexa actions.

Morning Routine

We’ve been homeschooling our kids this year, and start our day bright and early at 6:30 am. Not all of us are joyful in the morning, so to get us going, I have a routine that eases us into the day.

With the steps listed in the routine below, Alexa gives us a preview of the day from the perspective of the day’s weather and the family calendar. Then she calms tired nerves from the early wake-up with relaxing music.
