Faster Onboarding

3 tips for getting new team members contributing value quickly.

My team creates process automations, which quickly became crucial as the pandemic reared its ugly head last year. A need to quickly onboard more team members arose to support delivering more projects quickly.

Three things that helped us onboard quickly:

  1. Checklists
  2. Documentation
  3. Friendly Welcome

Checklists

We have a checklist for every task that needed to be handled for new team members, links and brief descriptions on how to do it, as well as who could help get it done.

This checklist is stored in our wiki environment. This allows us to easily add items and make edits as needs within our process flow change.

Examples of onboarding tasks:

  • HR Onboarding
  • Computer Setup
  • Adding new members to distribution lists and security groups
  • Necessary application access (listing specific applications and how to gain access for each)
  • Provide access to team chat
  • Calendar invites to recurring team meetings
  • Etc.
